8 Great Cars You Can Get for Cheap

8 Cheap Cars That Drive as Well as an Expensive Car

You want a car that will last forever and drives beautifully, without spending a lot of money. Fortunately, these 9 cheap cars drive as well as an expensive car

Keyword(s): cheap cars

With the price of new cars skyrocketing year after year, it's no surprise that more Canadians are looking to cheaper new car options. While buying a used car may have its benefits, nothing can compare to the mileage and warranty that comes with buying a new model.

Luckily, there are options for buying a new car that don't require breaking the bank. Whether you're preparing for a budget squeeze or are looking to minimize the cost of adding a new driver to the family, here are 8 cheap cars that drive just as good as an expensive buy.

1. Chevrolet Sonic LS Sedan

With Chevy revamping the style of all its models in recent years, the Chevy Sonic has a lot of attention to detail placed into it. While it is not the cheapest car on the list, the features that make the Sonic special more than make up for the price, while still keeping it affordable.

Among the standard features on the Sonic are an infotainment touchscreen display and air conditioning. It also comes with great safety features and 4G Wi-Fi compatibility. This is truly a car of our time that doesn't reflect the increased prices that most new cars have now.

2. Fiat 500 Pop

If you don't mind smaller cars, the Fiat 500 Pop may be the affordable car solution you need. For starters, the features that the Fiat 500 has included are a great set amongst cheap cars. On top of that, it is a very fun car to drive and has excellent steering and handling.

Unfortunately, the Fiat 500 does have some downsides. Its horsepower leaves much to be desired. On top of that, the back row of the car has almost no real space and is very uncomfortable. In the end, the purchase of this car will come down to personal preference of features.

3. Hyundai Accent SE

If you want to have a solid warranty and a great car overall, the Hyundai Accent may be the car you're looking for. While it's standard edition is very standard, you can add a few necessary features for a low cost. For example, the SE does not come with the automatic transmission many people desire.

Surprisingly enough, the Hyundai Accent does have an upscale feel to it and has much better horsepower and styling than many cheap cars at similar price points.

4. Smart Fortwo

Standing as the only car on this list that sits two people, the Smart Fortwo is definitely one of the more "different" cars on this list. For one, it is very small and compact, so it may be ideal for people who are single living in a city, to whom trunk space is not an issue.

Otherwise, you may want to avoid the Smart Fortwo. It lacks significantly in horsepower and doesn't get great fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, these factors and others make the Smart Fortwo an unnecessary expenditure.

5. Kia Rio Sedan

The Kia Rio is one of a kind in that it is one of few cheap cars that comes with four doors and horsepower up to 138. For $15,000, both are great features. The warranty that accompanies it is also great, as it is tough to say no to a 10-year/10,000 mile powertrain warranty.

The only things that the Kia Rio does lack are a couple of standard features that many car owners have come to expect, such as automatic windows. In the end, though, the quality of the car and how it drives is more than worth the price tag that is attached to it.

6. Ford Fiesta S Sedan

The Ford Fiesta is also a good example of what money can buy at a similar price point to the Kia Rio, near $15K. It has solid 120 horsepower and a nice European design, and is quite responsive to steering. The slogan for the Fiesta is a "party on wheels" and the way it handles supports this claim.

Where the Fiesta lacks, though, is on gas mileage, as it is only average or slightly below average for this category. As a subcompact, it also does not have the size of other models that may be preferred by some consumers.

7. Chevrolet Spark

Possibly the most outstanding model on this list, the Chevy Spark was redesigned in 2016 to be even smaller than its previous model, yet still feels like a great investment. The most notable place where the Spark lacks, other than in size, is in horsepower, where a sluggish 98 hp leaves drivers wanting more.

Fortunately, the Spark comes with many great amenities that simply are not usually seen at it's $13K price point. Things like a rearview camera, 10 airbags, wifi capabilities, and touchscreen display are all terrific features.

Driving wise, the Spark is a very stable car that handles extremely well at high speeds and can be a great beginner's car for teens or young adults. While it doesn't hide the fact that it is a lower-budget car, you may forget that it is from time to time.

8. Nissan Versa S

The final car on this list may be the car that truly reflects its price tag best. At just over $12K, the Nissan Versa is the cheapest option on this list, and it should primarily be considered if you're really passionate about saving money.

Many aspects of the Versa are cheap, from the interior design, to the feel of the steering wheel and seats, to even its sluggish horsepower. Luckily, the Versa will not only save you money up front; it also comes with great gas mileage.
